Summary
While the concept of AI has existed for decades, the technology truly entered the mainstream with the release of ChatGPT in late 2022. As someone who’s always been passionate about technology, I tried it almost immediately. Although I was impressed, I wasn’t completely convinced. Even after several months, I struggled to understand the excitement surrounding AI and whether it truly lived up to the hype.
The first tool that genuinely changed my perspective was NotebookLM. If you’re unfamiliar with it, NotebookLM is Google’s AI-powered personalized research assistant. I’ve been using it since its early days in Google Labs, long before it became widely known. Throughout that time, I’ve discovered several workflows that have made it an indispensable part of my daily routine—workflows I only wish I had started using much sooner.
Using NotebookLM as a Personal Assistant
Simplifying Everyday Repetitive Tasks
One of NotebookLM’s most underrated capabilities is serving as a personal assistant. Although it’s marketed as a personalized research assistant, it performs exceptionally well with repetitive daily tasks that don’t traditionally fall under the category of research.
For example, how often have you searched through a lengthy report trying to locate a single sentence you vaguely remembered? If you can’t recall the exact wording, CTRL/CMD + F becomes far less effective. The same applies when comparing different versions of a document or matching figures from presentation slides with their supporting reports.
These tasks may seem minor individually, but when repeated several times throughout the day, they consume a significant amount of time. NotebookLM handles them remarkably well, quietly eliminating much of that repetitive effort.
One of the biggest reasons it performs so reliably is its source-grounded design.
Unlike many AI chatbots, NotebookLM only references information you’ve explicitly provided—whether through uploaded documents or previous conversations within the notebook. This dramatically reduces hallucinations and eliminates the frustration of correcting AI-generated misinformation.
If the requested information isn’t available in your sources, NotebookLM simply tells you it doesn’t have enough information. It won’t search the internet or invent an answer.
In an era where many AI assistants confidently present inaccurate information, that level of restraint makes NotebookLM one of the most trustworthy AI tools available.
Using NotebookLM to Stay on Top of My Budget
Finally Understanding My Personal Finances
Using a research assistant for financial management might sound unconventional, but NotebookLM’s combination of AI capabilities and source-based responses makes it surprisingly effective.
I’ve previously explored this workflow in greater detail, but the basic idea is simple: NotebookLM acts as a second brain for everything related to personal finance.
Lately, I’ve been uploading my bank statements—after removing sensitive information such as my address and account number—and asking NotebookLM to analyze spending patterns.
Within seconds, I can ask questions like:
- What was my largest expense this month?
- Where am I spending the most money?
- Are there any noticeable spending trends?
Because NotebookLM references only the uploaded statements, the answers remain directly tied to my financial records.
One feature that has become especially valuable is Mind Maps.
Using a single bank statement, NotebookLM automatically organized the information into an interactive diagram containing four primary sections:
- Account Holder Information
- Statement Details
- Balance Summary
- Transactions (June 2025)
I’ve gradually expanded my notebook by adding annual statements, credit card and debit card statements, tax returns, along with the Excel spreadsheets and Notion databases I already use to manage my finances.
Having all of these documents in one searchable knowledge base provides a much clearer understanding of my overall financial situation.
Using NotebookLM for Passive Learning
Learning Without Feeling Like I’m Studying
I’ve always enjoyed learning new things. However, balancing full-time studies with an almost full-time workload leaves very little time to explore subjects outside my academic responsibilities.
Even during my two-hour daily commute, I often don’t have the energy to read research papers or lengthy articles—especially early in the morning. More often than not, I end up listening to music or podcasts instead.
Eventually, I realized something.
If I was already spending nearly two hours listening to podcasts, why not replace some of that time with content that actually helped me learn?
Better yet, why not listen to podcasts generated directly from the research papers and articles I intended to read?
That’s exactly how I started using NotebookLM’s Audio Overviews feature.
I’ve appreciated the feature since its release, but initially I only used it for exam revision. More recently, it has become one of my favorite ways to learn entirely new topics.
Audio Overviews transform uploaded documents into engaging podcast-style conversations between two virtual AI hosts.
The discussions feel natural, the voices sound surprisingly human, and the conversations often include light humor and entertaining banter that make the material easier to absorb.
It has become one of my favorite ways to begin the day, allowing me to turn commuting time into productive learning without feeling like I’m forcing myself to study.
I also listen to Audio Overviews while:
- Walking.
- Washing dishes.
- Working.
- Grocery shopping.
- Running everyday errands.
It’s one of the easiest and most enjoyable ways I’ve found to continue learning, even when time and motivation are limited.
NotebookLM Is the Only AI Tool That Truly Fits Into My Daily Life
When I first started using NotebookLM, I assumed it would simply become another study aid for preparing for exams.
Over time, however, it evolved into much more than a research assistant.
Today, it’s one of those rare tools that naturally becomes part of your daily routine. Whether I’m organizing information, managing finances, handling repetitive tasks, or learning new subjects, NotebookLM has quietly become an essential part of how I work.
Rather than feeling like another AI tool to experiment with, it has become a practical companion that consistently saves time, improves organization, and helps me stay productive every day.
