Proton Has Completely Changed the Linux Gaming Experience
Linux gaming has become one of the biggest talking points in recent years, especially following the release of the Steam Deck. Valve’s handheld proved that modern PC games can run exceptionally well on Linux, even though most of them were never developed for the operating system in the first place.
Native Linux versions of PC games remain relatively uncommon, yet that’s something you would hardly notice when using a Steam Deck. The reason is Proton, Valve’s compatibility layer that enables Windows games to run on Linux with impressive performance and compatibility—often without requiring any involvement from game developers.
Most PC Games Don’t Have Native Linux Versions
Yet They Run Like They Do
Browsing through my Steam library, there’s nothing that immediately tells me whether a game has a native Linux version or relies on Proton.
I only know that a handful of titles, such as Shadow of the Tomb Raider, officially support Linux because I deliberately searched for their supported platforms.
That alone highlights how far Linux gaming has progressed. Even when a game is designed exclusively for Windows, it often runs so smoothly on Linux that I never think about the underlying compatibility layer.
I’ve spent plenty of time playing Elden Ring on Linux without encountering any issues. Older games like Call of Juarez: Gunslinger perform just as well, and even newer releases, including the Grip XR demo, work without problems despite lacking native Linux support.
Every one of these games runs through Proton, yet the experience feels completely seamless. I install the game, launch it, and start playing without giving any thought to the fact that it wasn’t built for Linux.
That’s an impressive achievement for a compatibility layer.
Native Linux Versions Don’t Always Perform Better
Curious about the difference, I specifically looked for games in my Steam library that offer official Linux versions.
One example was Serious Sam 3.
I expected the native Linux version to offer some noticeable advantage over the Proton version, but that wasn’t the case. In fact, Steam defaulted to launching the Windows version through Proton, and I had to manually switch to the Steam Linux Runtime.
Surprisingly, the Proton version actually felt smoother.
I had a similar experience with Grow Home. The native Linux release wouldn’t launch at all, while the Windows version worked perfectly through Proton.
Those experiences reinforced just how mature Proton has become.
Windows Games Can Actually Perform Better on Linux
Proton Isn’t Necessarily a Performance Trade-Off
It’s easy to assume that running Windows games through a compatibility layer would inevitably reduce performance.
While that can happen in certain cases, it depends heavily on both the game and the hardware. More importantly, there are plenty of situations where the opposite is true.
During testing of the Lenovo Legion Go S, comparisons between the Windows and SteamOS versions showed that several major games—including Horizon: Zero Dawn Remastered, Cyberpunk 2077, Returnal, and Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy—performed better under SteamOS than on Windows.
None of these titles has a native Linux version. Every one of them relies on Proton.
Even so, Linux delivered higher performance.
In the case of Horizon: Zero Dawn Remastered, frame rates improved by as much as 75%, demonstrating that Proton is capable of delivering far more than simple compatibility.
Native Ports Don’t Always Have an Advantage
Those same performance tests also included Shadow of the Tomb Raider, one of the few games with an official Linux release.
Although it still performed well on Linux, its native version didn’t significantly outperform games running through Proton. From a performance standpoint, it fit comfortably alongside titles using the compatibility layer.
That says a great deal about how optimized Proton has become.
My Own Experience Mirrors the Benchmarks
Although I haven’t recorded detailed frame-rate statistics myself, my personal experience closely matches those benchmark results.
Games like the Grip XR demo and Saints Row IV have actually felt smoother on Linux than they did on Windows.
I’ve experienced fewer stutters, fewer freezes, and generally more consistent gameplay.
On paper, that sounds counterintuitive. In practice, however, it’s exactly what I’ve experienced.
Even Microsoft Appears to Be Taking Notice
SteamOS Has Become a Serious Benchmark
Perhaps the strongest indication of Proton’s success is that Microsoft is reportedly working to improve Windows gaming by learning from SteamOS.
According to earlier reports from Windows Central’s Zac Bowden, Microsoft is looking at SteamOS as a performance benchmark for gaming.
That’s remarkable when you consider that nearly all of these games are originally developed for Windows.
Instead of Linux struggling to catch up, Windows now appears to be trying to match the gaming experience offered by SteamOS.
That’s a powerful endorsement of how effective Proton has become.
Proton Isn’t Perfect—But It’s Rarely the Problem
Of course, Proton can’t solve every compatibility issue.
Some developers intentionally block Linux support, particularly in competitive multiplayer games where anti-cheat systems remain a challenge.
Because of that, Linux gaming still isn’t the ideal solution for every player.
However, those limitations generally stem from developer decisions rather than shortcomings in Proton itself.
Outside of certain competitive online titles, there are very few obstacles preventing users from enjoying modern PC games on Linux.
Linux Gaming Has Reached a New Level
Valve’s continued investment in Proton has transformed Linux into a genuinely capable gaming platform.
Developers may not be releasing native Linux versions of their games in large numbers, but Proton has become so effective that Windows titles often run just as well—and in some cases even better—than they do on the operating system they were originally designed for.
What’s even more surprising is that some Windows games running through Proton can outperform their own native Linux versions.
For anyone who still believes Linux gaming requires major compromises, today’s reality tells a very different story.
