The technology behind this feature is OpenAI’s Whisper speech recognition model. PotPlayer uses Whisper to transcribe dialogue in real time, eliminating the need for pre-existing SRT subtitle files. Because the subtitles are created directly from the audio, it works equally well with older video downloads, archived clips, or media that never included subtitles in the first place.
Although the results aren’t perfect in every situation, the accuracy is remarkably high when the audio is clean and professionally mixed.
How to Enable Real-Time Subtitles in PotPlayer
Getting started is straightforward.
Open any media file—preferably one with English audio—in PotPlayer, then right-click anywhere inside the playback window. Navigate to Subtitles, select Create subtitles from audio (Real-time), and choose Vulkan under the Whisper AI Engine settings.
Next, select the Whisper AI model that best matches your hardware. The Tiny models are ideal for lower-end systems, while the larger billion-parameter models deliver better transcription accuracy but require approximately 5–6 GB of available memory.
Leave the Whisper AI language option set to Auto, and PotPlayer will download the selected model. Depending on its size, the download may take several minutes. Once completed, real-time subtitles become available immediately during playback.
AI Translation Removes Language Barriers
Watching Foreign Content Is Easier Than Ever
While real-time English transcription is already impressive, PotPlayer’s live translation feature is what truly transformed my viewing experience.
Instead of simply converting speech into subtitles, the player can recognize dialogue spoken in another language and instantly translate it into English while the video continues playing. That means I no longer spend time searching for subtitle files before watching foreign-language movies or shows—the media player handles the entire process automatically.
It still helps to use context as a quick reality check during the first few scenes, but once everything settles in, the subtitles feel surprisingly natural.
Whisper AI handles speech recognition, while translation is powered by Google Translate by default. PotPlayer also supports alternative translation engines, including Bing, Libre, and LM Studio, giving users additional flexibility.
The entire process happens remarkably quickly. Within seconds, it feels as though the translated subtitles were included with the video from the beginning.
Translation Quality Depends on Audio Quality
Like any speech recognition technology, the overall accuracy depends largely on the quality of the original audio.
Professionally produced films, television series, and documentaries generally produce outstanding results because dialogue is clear and isolated from background noise.
On the other hand, personal recordings, crowded environments, or poor microphone quality can reduce transcription and translation accuracy. Even so, for professionally mastered content, PotPlayer has consistently delivered reliable performance in my experience.
How to Enable Live Subtitle Translation
To activate live translation, right-click inside the playback window, return to the Subtitles menu, and select Subtitle Translation.
Choose Google Translate as the default translation engine. I also recommend enabling Show translation only, which keeps the screen cleaner and easier to read.
You can manually specify both the Source Language and the Translation Language near the bottom of the settings menu to improve recognition accuracy.
After a few seconds, spoken dialogue in supported languages will begin appearing as real-time English subtitles with impressive accuracy.
A Small Feature That Solves a Big Problem

Since installing PotPlayer, I honestly can’t remember the last time I manually downloaded subtitle files.
Movie nights have become much smoother because I no longer pause everything while searching for the correct SRT file. Instead, I simply press Play and trust PotPlayer to handle the subtitles automatically—which it successfully does in the vast majority of cases.
That convenience alone has earned PotPlayer a permanent place on my PC.
Its AI features never feel intrusive or overhyped. They quietly solve a problem that has existed for decades and then stay out of the way. PotPlayer simply understands what I’m watching and adapts accordingly, making it incredibly difficult for me to imagine switching back to VLC.
