Speaking with CarBuzz during the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Aloisa Ruf, the future head of the family-owned manufacturer and daughter of company founder Alois Ruf, expressed her excitement about unveiling the new RUF B8 project.
She openly acknowledged the unconventional nature of the engine.
“It’s quite crazy and expensive. It makes no sense, but we like it when people tell us we can’t do something.”
She also described the philosophy behind the project:
“So many things are a wolf in sheep’s clothing, but the B8 is going to be a wolf in wolf’s skin. I hope people appreciate it now, and if they don’t, they may look back and appreciate it later.”
The prototype boxer-eight engine is currently installed in a modified CTR-3 chassis that has been stretched specifically to accommodate the larger engine. However, RUF has made it clear that the goal is to transform the concept into a fully road-legal production vehicle.
According to Aloisa Ruf:
“By only building 30 cars a year and having 100 employees, we believe in chasing our dreams and pushing for them.”
Why a Boxer-Eight Engine Is So Rare
One of the main reasons manufacturers have avoided boxer-eight engines is the complexity involved in adapting them for road cars.
Modern performance vehicles overwhelmingly rely on V6 and V8 engines because they offer several practical advantages, including:

This engineering challenge explains why the layout has remained exceptionally uncommon in production automobiles.
Overcoming the Biggest Engineering Challenge
According to Aloisa Ruf, one of the most difficult aspects of the project has been designing the engine’s lubrication system.
“One of the main challenges has been the oil system. Honestly, ECUs are always a challenge, but it’s nothing we can’t solve. We just keep pursuing perfection.”
The new engine features impressive specifications, including:
- 4.8-liter displacement
- Twin-turbocharging
- Manual transmission
- More than 1,000 horsepower
- 738 lb-ft of torque
While the engine is undoubtedly the centerpiece of the project, RUF emphasizes that the rest of the vehicle is equally inspired by motorsport engineering.

- Integrated roll cage.
- Dry sump lubrication system.
Aloisa Ruf also revealed that the project has been a long-standing vision of her father.
The dry sump lubrication system plays an especially important role because eliminating the traditional oil pan allows the engine to sit even lower within the chassis, further improving the vehicle’s center of gravity and overall handling characteristics.
Why the RUF B8 Matters
At a time when many believe the internal combustion engine has reached its engineering limits, RUF demonstrates that meaningful innovation is still possible.
Completely new engine configurations are exceptionally rare in today’s automotive industry, making the boxer-eight project a remarkable achievement built upon decades of engineering expertise.
