Summary
Christian von Koenigsegg is widely recognized for creating some of the world’s fastest hypercars, consistently redefining the limits of automotive engineering. With vehicles producing well over a thousand horsepower and approaching 300 mph, it’s easy to associate him solely with cutting-edge performance machines.
However, during this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, CarBuzz spoke with the founder of Koenigsegg, revealing a perspective that extends far beyond ultra-exclusive hypercars. His comments highlighted a lifelong passion for automobiles in every form, from affordable daily drivers to engineering masterpieces.
Christian von Koenigsegg: Every Car Represents Freedom
While discussing the challenges of bringing projects such as the Koenigsegg Gemera to production—the company’s first customer example was finally delivered six years after its public debut—the conversation turned toward the idea of building an affordable sports car similar to the Mazda MX-5 Miata.
Although Christian explained that such a project isn’t practical for Koenigsegg due to its low-volume production model, he emphasized that his appreciation for cars goes far beyond high-performance exotics.
According to him, every automobile, regardless of price or condition, represents freedom.
Even an old, worn-out car offers the ability to travel wherever its owner chooses with complete independence. He believes few technologies provide the same level of accessibility, flexibility, and personal freedom at such an affordable cost. In his view, a hypercar is simply the most extreme expression of that same fundamental concept.
A Longstanding Appreciation for Affordable Performance Cars
Christian’s enthusiasm for everyday vehicles is also reflected in his personal collection.
Alongside several high-performance Koenigsegg models, his garage includes electric Tesla vehicles, a Toyota GR Yaris, and his original NA-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata. After previously selling the Miata, he later tracked it down and purchased it again.
In an earlier interview with CarBuzz, Christian explained that the lightweight roadster delivers one of the purest driving experiences available. That sense of simplicity and driver engagement continues to influence the philosophy behind every Koenigsegg hypercar, regardless of its extraordinary performance capabilities.
Proud to See Koenigsegg Technology Adopted Across the Industry
Christian’s passion for automobiles also extends to technological collaboration.
He expressed pride in seeing Koenigsegg engineering incorporated into other manufacturers’ projects, including the engine developed for the Kimera K-39. He also noted that he would welcome opportunities to share the company’s expertise and technological solutions with automakers of all sizes.
For Christian, advancing automotive innovation benefits the entire industry rather than remaining exclusive to one brand.
His Perspective on Ferrari’s Simulated Manual Transmission
As Koenigsegg continues introducing innovative technologies, some of its concepts are beginning to appear elsewhere in the performance car market.
One example is Ferrari’s 12Cilindri Manuale, which introduces its own interpretation of a simulated manual transmission, drawing comparisons to Koenigsegg’s Engage Shift System.
Christian welcomed the development, explaining that Koenigsegg introduced the technology because the company believed it offered a better driving experience. Seeing other manufacturers adopt similar ideas serves as confirmation that the concept has value.
At the same time, he remains confident that the system featured in the Koenigsegg CC850 retains important engineering advantages. He pointed to the company’s unique transmission design, faster gear changes, and the absence of both a traditional flywheel and clutch, allowing the engine to rev more quickly than conventional systems.
According to Christian, these technical differences continue to distinguish Koenigsegg’s solution from similar implementations.
A Passion for Cars That Goes Beyond Performance
Whether discussing the driving enjoyment of a Mazda MX-5 Miata, the freedom offered by an aging economy car, or the engineering excellence of a Koenigsegg hypercar, Christian von Koenigsegg speaks with the same level of enthusiasm.
His perspective serves as a reminder that, regardless of performance figures, exclusivity, or price, the passion for driving remains the common thread connecting every automotive enthusiast.
