Summary
Mercedes-AMG caught the automotive world by surprise at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed by unveiling the all-new CLA 45, a performance sedan that delivers an impressive combination of power, technology, and versatility.
At first glance, its headline figure of 671 horsepower sent exclusively to the rear wheels may sound like a return to the brand’s traditional performance formula. However, the new CLA 45 introduces a completely different approach. In addition to rear-wheel drive, it can also operate as a front-wheel-drive sedan or as an all-wheel-drive model—all while being fully electric.
Regardless of opinions surrounding its electric powertrain, the new CLA 45 made a strong impression at the Festival of Speed. Here’s a closer look at what Mercedes-AMG has introduced.
Sportier Design with Smarter Aerodynamics
Although the new Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 shares certain styling elements with the latest AMG GT 4-Door, its proportions appear more balanced and cohesive. The traditional sedan silhouette, combined with a cleaner front-end design, gives it a more refined and athletic appearance without overemphasizing Mercedes’ signature three-pointed star design language.
At the rear, a full-width LED light bar dominates the design, but the standout feature is positioned just above it. The CLA 45 becomes the first subcompact luxury model to feature an active aerodynamic trunk spoiler capable of deploying into multiple positions. This system automatically adjusts to improve aerodynamic efficiency, increase downforce, and optimize handling depending on driving conditions.
The aggressive stance is further enhanced by wider fenders housing standard 19-inch wheels, while optional 20-inch wheels are available. When equipped with the larger wheels, rear tire width increases to 275 mm. Standard tire sizes measure 245/40 at the front and 265/40 at the rear.
Tri-Motor Electric Powertrain Produces 671 Horsepower
Performance goes far beyond appearance. The new Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 is powered by three YASA-sourced axial flux electric motors.
The pair of motors mounted on the rear axle produces the vehicle’s maximum output of 671 horsepower, while the front motor is dedicated solely to improving traction rather than increasing peak power. For greater efficiency, the vehicle can disconnect the rear axle and operate exclusively with the front motor whenever additional performance isn’t required.
This advanced powertrain enables a maximum estimated driving range of 416 miles based on the WLTP testing cycle.
Supercar-Level Performance
Performance figures place the CLA 45 among the quickest electric performance sedans available.
Acceleration from 0 to 62 mph takes just 2.7 seconds (excluding one-foot rollout). Buyers who opt for the AMG Dynamic Plus Package will also benefit from an increased top speed of 168 mph.
Simulated Combustion Experience
Mercedes-AMG understands that driving engagement extends beyond outright performance. To preserve the emotional character traditionally associated with AMG models, the company has introduced a combustion simulation system.
The electric powertrain recreates the sound of the previous CLA 45’s turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while simulated gear shifts in AMGFORCE S+ mode mimic the familiar power delivery of an internal combustion engine. The experience is further enhanced by vibrating seats designed to replicate engine vibrations and create a more immersive driving feel.
Availability
While the new Mercedes-AMG CLA 45 delivers impressive technology, remarkable performance, and innovative engineering, there is one significant limitation for enthusiasts in North America.
Mercedes-AMG has confirmed that the fully electric CLA 45 will not be offered in the United States, where demand for combustion-engine performance vehicles continues to dominate the market.
