Summary
Spider-Man fans have enjoyed a remarkable run over the past decade, thanks to Tom Holland’s successful stint in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the critically acclaimed Spider-Verse animated films from Sony Pictures.
However, excitement surrounding the final installment in the animated trilogy—Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse—continues to be tested by frequent delays.
Originally slated for release in 2024, the highly anticipated film has now been pushed back several times.
After being rescheduled to June 4, 2027, a recent update via Variety confirms yet another shift: Beyond the Spider-Verse is now scheduled to debut on June 25, 2027.
Why the Delay?
According to insiders, Sony Pictures adjusted the release date to better align with the U.S. summer break.
While the original June 4 date coincided with only about 65% of American students being on vacation, the new June 25 date ensures that 100% will be off school—a strategic move aimed at boosting box office performance.
A History of Setbacks
The journey of Beyond the Spider-Verse has been far from smooth.
The first film in the trilogy, Into the Spider-Verse (2018), won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and earned over $384 million globally.
Its sequel, Across the Spider-Verse (2023), nearly doubled that with $690 million, though it lost the Oscar to The Boy and the Heron.
Unfortunately, production on the final chapter was derailed by the SAG-AFTRA strike in 2023, which delayed voice recordings and caused Sony to push the release to June 2025.
Additional scheduling conflicts—particularly the MCU’s Spider-Man: Brand New Day arriving in June 2026—forced Sony to avoid overlap and delay the film once again.
Sony’s High Stakes
While Sony’s live-action Spider-Man villain spinoffs like Morbius and Madame Web have underperformed, the animated Spider-Verse trilogy has been a bright spot.
Beyond the Spider-Verse now carries high expectations, both creatively and financially, with hopes it will cap off the trilogy as one of the greatest Spider-Man stories ever told—and provide the box office win Sony needs.
As fans look ahead to 2027, all eyes will be on whether Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse finally swings into theaters without further setbacks.
