While these solutions can certainly help, poor router placement isn’t always the root cause. Several factors affect wireless performance, and the ideal router location isn’t always practical.

Why the Default Channel Width Isn’t Always Ideal

If you’ve never accessed your router’s admin panel, there’s a good chance the channel width is still set to its default configuration. On most routers—including mine—that means Auto for both frequency bands, or 40 MHz for the 2.4 GHz band and 80 MHz for the 5 GHz band.
Most routers also allow you to choose narrower channel widths, such as 20 MHz or 40 MHz. While an 80 MHz channel can theoretically carry more data than a 20 MHz or 40 MHz channel, real-world conditions are rarely ideal.
The downside of wider channels is increased interference from nearby wireless networks. This is especially common in apartment buildings or densely populated neighborhoods where multiple routers operate within close proximity.
The 2.4 GHz band has 11 usable channels, but only channels 1, 6, and 11 are non-overlapping. Since these are also the channels most routers rely on, increasing the channel width from 20 MHz to 40 MHz causes the router to occupy a larger portion of the available spectrum. Because the 2.4 GHz band is only 83.5 MHz wide, this significantly increases the chances of interference.
Understanding Channel Width with a Simple Analogy
Think of your Wi-Fi spectrum as a highway, where the channel width represents the number of lanes.
A wider channel is like adding more lanes, allowing more cars—or, in this case, more data—to travel at the same time. That’s the theoretical advantage.
However, the available frequency spectrum is limited. In environments with many nearby routers, you’re not driving on an open highway—you’re navigating through a crowded city. With limited space, fewer lanes help maintain order. Although traffic may move more slowly, it flows more consistently.
The same principle applies to Wi-Fi. Reducing the channel width can improve network stability in areas where many routers compete for the same frequencies.
Reducing the Channel Width Solved My Wi-Fi Problems
It’s Easier Than You Might Expect
Before making any changes, it’s important to know which channel widths are generally recommended:
- 2.4 GHz: 20 MHz
- 5 GHz: 40 MHz or 80 MHz
There’s also some good news. The 5 GHz band—and the 6 GHz band, if your router supports it—offers a much wider frequency range with more non-overlapping channels. As a result, these bands experience significantly less interference.
Because of that, adjusting their channel width isn’t always necessary, although doing so usually doesn’t hurt.
How to Change Channel Width on Your Router
The exact steps vary depending on your router manufacturer. Some interfaces are straightforward, while older ISP-provided routers may require a little more navigation.
Here’s how I changed the settings on a TP-Link router:
- Open a web browser and enter your router’s IP address. This is typically 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.1.1, and it’s usually printed on the router.
- Expand the Wireless section and select Wireless Settings.
- Open 2.4 GHz Advanced Settings.
- From the Channel Width dropdown menu, select 20 MHz.
- If desired, adjust the 5 GHz channel width under 5 GHz Advanced Settings.
- Click Save to apply the changes.
Once you’ve updated the settings, use your Wi-Fi normally for a few days and observe whether the connection feels faster and more stable. If you notice any unexpected instability—which is unlikely—you can simply restore the default configuration.
Increasing Channel Width Can Also Help—In the Right Environment
Wider Channels Aren’t Always the Best Choice
Now that you understand how channel width affects Wi-Fi performance, it may seem logical to increase it for faster speeds. In some situations, that approach works very well—but only under the right conditions.
Using wider channels, such as 40 MHz on the 2.4 GHz band or 80–160 MHz on the 5 GHz band, is most effective when there are few or no nearby wireless networks competing for the same frequencies.
If you live in a relatively isolated location, wider channels allow your router to take full advantage of the available spectrum. However, most people live in environments with many neighboring Wi-Fi networks.
That’s why increasing channel width, while theoretically beneficial, often results in reduced stability in the average household.
Small Router Settings Can Make a Big Difference
Over the past week, I’ve spent time exploring various networking settings on my home router, including both channel selection and channel width. What I discovered is that these often-overlooked settings can have a surprisingly noticeable impact on Wi-Fi performance.
That said, it’s important to remember that every wireless environment is different. A setting that works perfectly for one person may not produce the same results for someone else.
Instead of relying solely on general recommendations, experiment with your router’s settings and see what works best for your environment. It’s also worth using a Wi-Fi analyzer app to identify the least congested channels before making changes.
Even if a particular adjustment doesn’t improve your network—or makes it less stable—you can always revert to the default settings. That’s one of the advantages of experimenting with router configuration.
