Summary
Jude Bellingham has responded to Thomas Tuchel’s post-match criticism of England’s performance despite their dramatic 2–1 victory over Norway in the World Cup quarter-finals.
England secured a place in their second semi-final in three tournaments after Bellingham scored twice to overcome a determined Norway side that had taken an early lead.
Although the result was positive, the performance fell short of expectations. Tuchel delivered a passionate but constructive assessment after the match, praising his players’ mentality while questioning their overall quality and execution.
Bellingham, however, offered a different perspective, describing the match as a difficult battle and highlighting England’s character as they await the winner of the quarter-final clash between Argentina and Switzerland.
Thomas Tuchel Delivers Honest Criticism After England Win
Tuchel did not hide his disappointment with England’s display despite the victory.
“We made life very difficult for ourselves,” Tuchel said. “The result is fantastic, it’s amazing, but we are not happy with the performance.”
When asked to explain what went wrong, the German manager provided a straightforward assessment:
“In every sense. Sloppy, a lot of technical mistakes, not fast enough: we were lucky today.”
When questioned whether England’s issues were related to mentality, Tuchel strongly rejected that idea during his interview with ITV’s Gabriel Clarke, instead defending his players’ mindset and emphasizing that their mentality was a major reason they achieved victory.
He stated:
“I am not happy. The way we played was sloppy, we did a lot of technical mistakes.”
“It is nothing to do with mentality. We need to play better…”
Speaking specifically about Bellingham, who scored another brace following his goals against Mexico, Tuchel praised the Real Madrid midfielder as a “world-class” player and highlighted his ability to deliver consistently in every match.
Jude Bellingham Provides a Strong Response
When Bellingham was informed that Tuchel was unhappy with England’s performance, his response reflected the midfielder’s confidence and belief in the team.
“It’s difficult out there. A tough shift,” Bellingham said.
He continued:
“Character, perseverance, when things weren’t working we found a way to win a game. We gave it everything we’ve got. So proud of this team.”
Rather than focusing solely on the performance level, Bellingham emphasized England’s resilience and ability to find a result in challenging circumstances.
How England Defeated Norway
The match came to life after Andreas Schjelderup opened the scoring for Norway in the first half. The Benfica forward produced an effort that blurred the line between a cross and a shot, but it was enough to surprise England and give Norway the advantage.
England responded before halftime through Bellingham. After receiving an intelligent pass from Anthony Gordon, the midfielder drove into the penalty area and fired a powerful low finish beyond Ørjan Nyland to level the score.
Norway then thought they had regained the lead early in the second half when Torbjørn Heggem found the net, but VAR overturned the goal after identifying a foul by Erling Haaland on Elliot Anderson during the build-up.
Bellingham eventually decided the contest early in extra time, scoring his second goal of the match to send England into the semi-finals.
The strike was his sixth World Cup goal in this format, surpassing the total achieved by legendary midfielder Zinedine Zidane throughout his World Cup career.
England now move on to the semi-finals, where they will face either Argentina or Switzerland.
