Summary
Manchester United have temporarily paused their search for another midfielder following the arrivals of Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, but one of their long-term transfer targets remains eager to complete a move to Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have already enjoyed a productive summer transfer window, investing around £85 million to strengthen the midfield after the departure of veteran Casemiro.
Manager Michael Carrick now has Santos and Tielemans alongside Kobbie Mainoo as he continues to build his midfield around captain Bruno Fernandes. Mason Mount also remains an option if he stays at Old Trafford. Despite those additions, Manchester United are still expected to recruit one more midfielder to strengthen the squad for both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League campaigns next season.
Carlos Baleba Remains Focused on a Manchester United Move
One player firmly on Manchester United’s radar is Brighton & Hove Albion midfielder Carlos Baleba.
The 22-year-old joined Brighton from Lille in 2023 for £23 million and has since established himself as one of the Premier League’s most promising midfielders, making 92 league appearances for the Seagulls.
Speaking to The United Stand, GIVEMESPORT senior football correspondent Ben Jacobs provided an update on Baleba’s situation.
According to Jacobs:
“If they’re prepared to meet the asking price, they could complete the deal relatively quickly because he’s in a similar position to Youri Tielemans. Last summer, he made it clear that he only wanted Manchester United, and that hasn’t changed. If United make their move, agreeing personal terms won’t be an issue.”
Jacobs also explained that Baleba’s preference for Manchester United could simplify negotiations.
“They already have the player’s commitment, meaning they would only need to negotiate with Brighton rather than enter a bidding war. However, Manchester United have temporarily put the brakes on while they decide who their third midfield signing will be.”
Brighton Could Demand Around £100 Million
Baleba’s development experienced some setbacks last season, with the midfielder occasionally showing visible frustration during matches at the Amex Stadium.
His situation may have been influenced by widespread transfer speculation during the previous summer, when reports suggested he had already agreed personal terms with Manchester United.
Despite that, United never submitted an official offer, even though the club was reportedly prepared to pay around £75 million for the Cameroon international.
Now, Brighton are believed to value Baleba at close to £100 million. The midfielder remains under contract until 2028, giving the Seagulls a strong negotiating position despite his mixed campaign last season.
Manchester United’s recruitment team will need to carefully consider whether Brighton’s valuation represents good value before making a formal approach.
For now, the club has the luxury of taking its time, knowing that Baleba’s preferred destination remains Old Trafford.
