As part of its ongoing efforts to foster a sustainable and attractive investment climate, enhance energy efficiency, and reduce emissions, Egypt’s Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources organized a specialized workshop in collaboration with global energy company Eni, focusing on methane emissions management. The event aligns with the directives of Minister Karim Badawi, who stressed the importance of leveraging global best practices and applying them across Egypt’s petroleum and gas sector.
The workshop was inaugurated by Geologist Alaa El-Batal, First Undersecretary for Energy Efficiency, Climate, Environment, and Safety at the Ministry, and held at Eni’s premises in Cairo. The event saw broad participation from representatives of international energy companies, as well as officials responsible for safety, environment, energy efficiency, and production at EGPC and affiliated holding companies.
In his opening remarks, El-Batal emphasized the strategic and fruitful partnership between the Ministry and Eni. He noted that the workshop is a continuation of a series of successful sessions held in cooperation with leading global energy firms operating in Egypt, aimed at knowledge exchange and raising awareness of modern technologies and best practices in energy transition and emission reduction, in line with Egypt Vision 2030 for sustainable development.
He added that methane emissions reduction is a top priority for the petroleum sector due to its significant environmental and economic benefits. The Ministry is keen to strengthen cooperation with international partners by adopting cutting-edge digital innovations and technologies that ensure the sustainability and added value of petroleum and gas resources.
Eni’s specialized team presented a comprehensive overview of the Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) principles and guidelines, including methodologies for monitoring, measurement, and reporting of methane emissions. Case studies from joint Eni sites were also discussed, highlighting key lessons learned from implementing emission reduction campaigns.
The workshop concluded with a mutual agreement to continue cooperation and knowledge-sharing. Both sides also explored opportunities for collaboration between the Ministry’s Center of Excellence for Energy Transition and Eni in offering specialized training programs for methane emissions measurement and repair. Future workshops are also planned, with the involvement of companies specializing in methane monitoring technologies to explore practical applications of the latest innovations in this critical field.
