You can now guide the algorithm to explore new genres every week
If you’re anything like me, you rely on music algorithms to uncover fresh tracks.
And while Spotify’s Discover Weekly has been a reliable source of new music since its launch nearly a decade ago, it hasn’t really changed much—until now.
In a long-awaited update, Spotify is giving Premium users the ability to tailor Discover Weekly to specific genres.
This means that if you’ve been locked into pop playlists for years, you can finally tell the algorithm you’re ready for something different—whether it’s jazz, indie rock, electronic, or anything in between.
Here’s what’s new:
-
Select up to five genres to guide your personalized Discover Weekly playlist.
-
Receive 30 handpicked tracks every Monday, curated based on your genre preferences.
-
Ideal for users whose music tastes have evolved but whose algorithm hasn’t caught up.
This upgrade gives you more control than ever over your listening experience, making it easier to dive into unfamiliar musical territory.
Instead of waiting for the algorithm to “catch on,” you can now proactively direct it toward what you actually want to hear.
Spotify says over 56 million new artists are discovered through Discover Weekly every week, proving the feature’s influence.
And while this new functionality is currently limited to Premium subscribers, the company says it has plans to expand access in the future—though it hasn’t shared a specific timeline yet.
With music recommendation algorithms becoming central to how we experience audio content, this update is a smart move that makes Spotify more relevant than ever—especially for listeners ready to break out of their usual playlists.
