Anti-Don’t Say Gay” protesters gathered outside Disney World on Tuesday to voice their opposition to the proposed legislation. Some talks about sexuality and gender identity would be prohibited in Florida schools under the provisions of the bill.
Workers participated in the rally as part of a company-wide strike to demand that Disney cease its support for the Republican politicians who are sponsoring the measure.
Activists at theme parks such as Nicholas Maleonau, who stood outside Walt Disney World draped in a rainbow flag and waving a placard that said “trans rights are human rights,” work at the parks.
He acknowledges that he may lose his job as a result of his participation in the walkout, but he believes it is worth it if it means standing up for individuals in the LGBTQ community, of which he is a member, and opposing this legislation.
“It gives me great pleasure to be out here. And I’m delighted to be a member of the Disney World community, which is a diverse mix of people from across the world. Because, I mean, I’ve never met so many lovely individuals who are so enthusiastic about the Disney brand.”
When asked what he wants to say to demonstrators, Gov. Ron DeSantis said he had a message for them:
“However, keep in mind that if you are out protesting this law, you are implicitly endorsing the practise of infusing sexual training into children as young as 5, 6, and 7 years old. I believe the majority of people believe this is incorrect. “I believe that parents, in particular, believe that is incorrect.”
He expects to sign the bill into law over the next several weeks.
