Uncharted opened in theatres last week, continuing PlayStation’s quest to adapt some of its most popular games into films and television shows. The big-screen adaptation stars Tom Holland as Nathan Drake, and as the Spider-Man actor revealed during a SiriusXM appearance, he enjoys brushing up on some of the skills his on-screen characters possess in order to make his performances feel more authentic.
Holland attended bartending school and worked as a bartender prior to filming Uncharted. “I ended up working a couple of shifts at this London bar, which was a lot of fun. “I had a great time,” Holland revealed. To be sure, he was having a good time until he was effectively fired from the role.
Holland makes no mention of whether he was a skilled bartender, though his enthusiasm when discussing espresso martinis and his performance in the film suggest he is. It was not his bartending abilities, or lack thereof, that cost him his pub job. It was a minor detail, but he is rapidly establishing himself as one of the world’s most recognisable actors. When word spread that Holland was mixing drinks at a London bar, people flocked to the establishment to see him for themselves.
You’d think that more people visiting a bar and thus spending more money would be beneficial to the proprietors, but apparently not. Holland was eventually asked to resign from his bartending position and has yet to be welcomed back as a patron, at least not willingly. “At the moment, it’s a bit of a rocky relationship. However, I’ve been giving them a lot of attention. Therefore, they should just shut up and release me.”
Holland is unlikely to leave Hollywood to work full-time as a bartender anytime soon, but he may be required to continue embodying Drake in the future. Sony has already indicated that it intends to make additional Uncharted films, despite the fact that only one has been made thus far. The franchise designation follows the announcement that Uncharted grossed $106 million during its opening weekend, making it the fourth highest-grossing video game film ever in its first three days.
