On Sunday, the Chinese company “TikTok” announced that users in Russia will be temporarily barred from streaming and uploading new videos to its platform, citing the country’s recently enacted fake news law, which threatens individuals accused of spreading false information with up to 15 years in prison.
“We have no alternative but to halt live broadcasts and new material for our video service in Russia while we investigate the law’s security implications,” TikTok added.
The business went on to say that the decision will have no impact on in-app communications.
“We will continue to analyse the situation in Russia in order to determine when we can fully restart our services with safety as our first concern,” TikTok added.
