Both Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White have been working out in the gym and are now ready to enter the wrestling arena.
The trailer for A24’s upcoming sports biography “The Iron Claw,” which stars Efron and White, has been released. The film, directed by Sean Durkin, follows Efron as wrestler Kevin Von Erich, also known as the Golden Warrior, a member of the legendary Von Erich wrestling dynasty. Kerry Von Erich, Kevin’s brother who also participated in the heavyweight class, is played by White. Fritz Von Erich, Kevin and Kerry’s father and a three-time world champion, is played by Holt McCallany. The film delves into the lives of the family members and depicts the rise and collapse of the prominent wrestling family. Lily James, Maura Tierney, Harris Dickinson, and Stanley Simons all appear.
Efron and White’s considerable physique gains for their respective parts helped draw attention to the film even before the trailer’s release. White told GQ that he intended to gain 40 pounds of muscle for this part, and social media users quickly found humor in photos of Efron’s ripped body and Von Erich-inspired bowl cut.
After his performance as Ted Bundy in “Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil, and Vile,” a tragic biography, this is Efron’s latest departure from his usual comedic roles. White, on the other hand, has become a household name because to his portrayals of two lovable TV characters: Philip Gallagher on “Shameless” (which ran for 11 seasons on Showtime) and troubled but lovable chef Carmy Berzato in “The Bear” (which ran for one season on FX).
Two of Durkin’s psychological dramas, “The Nest” and “Martha Marcy May Marlene,” both had their world premieres at the Sundance Film Festival and received widespread critical praise. Five of Fritz’s six boys died before the age of 33, including three who committed suicide; although the Von Erichs are famous for wrestling titles, the family’s private life were also marred by a sequence of tragedies.
Producing “The Iron Claw” are A24, BBC Films, House Productions, and Access Entertainment. The film will debut in cinemas on December 22.
