If deposed President Mohamed Bazoum does not return to power within a week, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will adopt all measures necessary to restore constitutional order in Niger.
ECOWAS demanded that the military commanders “immediately release” the detained president and “restore constitutional order in the Republic of Niger in its entirety.”
During its emergency summit on Sunday (July 30, 2023) in Nigeria’s capital, Abuja, the (ECOWAS) gave the putschists in Niger one week to restore constitutional order to power following the coup against President Mohamed Bazoum, without ruling out “the use of force.”
The member of ECOWAS was informed that if “(the demands) are not met within a week,” the organisation will “take all necessary measures, including the use of force.” “For this purpose, the chiefs of defence staff of the member states will meet immediately,” said the same source.
