During a vacation in the Caribbean, an eight-foot tiger shark killed a 56-year-old tourist.
When he was bitten by a shark while snorkelling in La Piscinita on the coast of San Andres, Antonio Roseto Degli Abruzzi died of blood loss.
When he was out swimming on March 18, he is said to have had a chunk of his thigh torn off.
After he was rescued by another person in the area, the victim lay on the beach, sprawled, in the shocking images that were shared shortly after the attack.
The bleeding man was carried away by a group of people.
It has been reported that this is the first attack of its kind to occur on the Caribbean island.
An official government spokesperson said, “There are professional shark diving programmes, but nothing has ever happened.”
“We’re all shocked,” said Mirla Zambrano, a 50-year-old diving instructor. For the first time in the history of San Andres, a shark attacked a tourist.
In terms of recorded human deaths, tiger sharks are second only to great whites in terms of fatalities. They are, however, still exceedingly rare.
In a video posted online, two sharks believed to be responsible for the attack can be seen swimming around the area.
Because tiger sharks have an almost completely undiscerning palate, they are unlikely to swim away after biting a human, as great whites frequently do, according to the National Geographic.
Fisherman Rodrigo Lopez said, “People are very concerned about what has happened and they are not allowing people to go into the water.”
According to a witness, the victim had been swimming in the sea for some time and when he returned to shore, he began shouting for help and was surrounded by blood when he went further out into the sea.
