CNN’s Alex Kirkland and Rodrigo Faez say that three Valencia fans were given eight months in prison for racial slurs directed at Real Madrid star Vinícius Júnior during a game between Valencia and Real Madrid in May 2023.
The three fans were also banned from the stadium for two years.
LaLiga president Javier Tebas said, “This ruling is great news for the fight against racism in Spain. It makes up for the wrong done to Vinícius Júnior and sends a clear message to people who go to football games to insult others.” The LaLiga will find them, report them, and they will face criminal charges.
Real Madrid also said something about the decision.
Madrid said: “The three defendants acknowledged their criminal liability and have released an apology letter addressed to our player Vinícius Júnior, to Real Madrid C.F. and to everyone else who felt offended and degraded by their behaviour”
It said: “As well as showing their remorse, the three defendants asked in their letter to fans that all forms of racism and intolerance be eradicated in competitions.”
For his part, Vinicius Jr. said, “I’ve always said that I’m not a racist.” Racists are a pain for me. In Spain’s past, this is the first time someone has been found guilty of a crime. It’s for all black people.
Make other haters scared, ashamed, and hide in the dark. If not, I’ll be here to get it. La Liga and Real Madrid should be thanked for their help in this important decision. There will be more.
