Prince William, the Prince of Wales, has selected Sheffield as an important location for his five-year campaign to end homelessness in the United Kingdom. This initiative, known as Homewards, will provide the city council and various agencies in Sheffield with funding and support to assist individuals without secure housing.
During his time in the city, Prince William met with members of Reach Up Youth, a local organisation devoted to assisting those in need. The prince engaged in discourse with the youth and listened to their personal accounts in order to obtain insight into the organization’s work.
In Sheffield, the Homewards campaign will target families living in transient housing, such as hostels and shelters, as well as those experiencing concealed homelessness. The city council has also acknowledged the issue of disproportionate homelessness among people of colour and ethnic minorities, and the campaign seeks to address this disparity.
The collaboration between the council and its various stakeholders will strengthen the existing network and increase the accessibility of support services for those in need. The Homewards programme seeks to intervene before families reach a critical point of homelessness, and the council is presently developing detailed implementation plans.
