Officials say that at least 44 people were killed and dozens more were hurt when a suicide bomber blew himself up at a party meeting in northwest Pakistan. The bombing was meant to hurt the Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam party, which is part of the alliance that runs the country.
When the attack happened in the town of Khar near the border with Afghanistan, more than 400 party members and allies were under a tent.
Abdullah Khan, who tried to help the victims, said, “The tent collapsed on one side, and people trying to escape were trapped.”
Shehbaz Sharif, the prime minister of Pakistan, spoke out against the explosion on social media. He also sent his sympathies to the people who were hurt and vowed to punish the people who did it.
