As he gets ready to celebrate a very important birthday this month, one of Liverpool FC’s oldest fans told me the secret to living a long and happy life.
Charles Gallagher has been a big fan of Liverpool FC for as long as he can remember. He has watched every game and success for as long as he can remember and is proud to be one of the club’s longest season ticket holders. Charles’s 100th birthday is planned for May 20, 2022.
His best advice, which he gave to the ECHO, was to not worry about getting old because “age is just a number.” He also said that “porridge with blueberries in the morning” and “dark chocolate before bed” help.
He told people it was important to take “one day at a time.” Charles has spent most of his life in the city centre of Liverpool. He served in the war for four years before going back to work on the buses.
As a huge Liverpool FC fan, the soon-to-be 100-year-old once talked to the late Liverpool forward Ian St. John about his time with the team.

“He was with my dad and brother at Hillsborough. They never talk about it, but he has been to a lot of games and loves them a lot.
“In 1965, when Bill Shankly was the manager, Liverpool beat Leeds to win their first FA Cup. This is his favourite memory. He is a huge fan and loves everything about them, but when they play badly, he is very harsh on them.”
Even though Charles is getting close to 100, he is said to be very independent and “quite fit and healthy.” Claire said that he still lives at home, is “very independent,” and likes to “do his own laundry.”
Charles fell in love with Florence, who was his first love and soulmate. She died at the age of 82, which was sad, but he had three children, seven grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren to help him through his “heartbreaking grief.”
Claire also said: “I thought he wouldn’t last long because he was sad, but he started taking computer classes and going to different church groups. This kept him busy, which really helped. He is known by a lot of people.
“As his grandchildren, we all have so many memories of him, from going on vacation with him to him sending my brother and me to college with a box full of food.
