Kate McKinnon spoke out against Florida’s divisive “Don’t Say Gay” bill on “Saturday Night Live.”
In the most recent episode of “Weekend Update,” McKinnon, 38, appeared with co-anchor Colin Jost and seemed perplexed about the “Don’t Say Gay” law.
“I heard about this rule, and I think it’s fantastic,” said McKinnon, who is openly gay. “The frequent use of the word “gay” plagued me when I was in middle school in the 1990s. ‘That’s so gay,’ or ‘Ew, you’re gay,’ for example. It made me feel really bad.”
McKinnon went on to say that Florida Governor Ron DeSantis “had taken a position,” and that she was “so jazzed” about it.
She said, “And, of course, in Florida!”
Jost then argued that McKinnon was misinformed about the bill’s provisions. It was previously known as the Parental Rights Education bill, and it would make it illegal to address sex and gender in Florida’s elementary schools. It also encourages parents to file lawsuits against schools or teachers who bring the subject up.
According to CBS News, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has championed and defended the bill against detractors, most recently on Friday during a press conference in Jackson, Florida.
The Republican-backed plan was passed by the Florida House of Representatives on February 24 and will be voted on by the Florida Senate on Monday, according to CBS News. If passed, the measure would take effect in the 2022-2023 school year.
