Mike Flanagan, the visionary behind “Doctor Sleep,” will ensure that the universe of “The Exorcist” continues to expand.
Blumhouse and Morgan Creek have hired Flanagan to write, direct, and produce a “radical new take” on “The Exorcist.”
“I am honored to have the opportunity to experiment with something new, daring, and terrifying within the universe of ‘The Exorcist,’ as it is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker,” Flanagan stated. “This is only made more thrilling by the prospect of reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I have collaborated on some of my most cherished works.”
Trevor Macy (on behalf of Intrepid Pictures) and Flanagan (via his new Red Room Pictures banner) will produce the new “Exorcist” film. Additionally, John Scherer will be contributing to the film on behalf of Intrepid.
This film represents the fourth collaboration between Flanagan and Blumhouse. He also wrote and directed “Oculus” (2013), “Hush” (2016), and “Ouija: Origin of Evil” (2016), all of which were produced by Macy.
It is important to mention that Flanagan’s film is a completely original narrative and is not a sequel to “The Exorcist: Believer,” which was directed by David Gordon Green in 2023.
Green had intended to direct a trilogy of “Exorcist” films, with a sequel titled “The Exorcist: Deceiver” set to release in 2025. However, he withdrew from the franchise in January after “Believer” grossed $137 million globally, but underperformed with critics.
