Lloyds Banking Group says it will close 60 of its stores this year.
The Lloyds Bank, Bank of Scotland, and Halifax branches will all be closed.
According to Vim Maru, group retail director of the Lloyds Banking Group, less and less people are going to their branches.
“Our branch network is a good way for us to help our customers, but we need to adapt to the fact that many people now do most of their banking online.”
People in the Unite union said that 124 jobs would be lost because of the decision. A Lloyds spokesperson did not deny this, but said that the company was trying to find jobs for employees in other places.
People say Lloyds has stopped caring about local communities.
She said: “Lloyds Banking Group must not be allowed to leave 60 more communities where bank branches play an important role.”
In their communities, there are 124 people who work hard to serve the banking needs of the most vulnerable people who need their help the most.
As soon as a bank branch closes, a lot of people’s lives are thrown into chaos.
“Unite says that leaving an ATM in place of a lively bank branch is not enough.”
“The banking industry needs to answer some very important questions about its corporate social responsibilities, and the government can’t stand by and let the closure of banks keep going until there are no more local banks left.”
