At Lusail Stadium, a World Cup final for the ages was about to go into extra time when Kylian Mbappe scored two goals in a matter of minutes to crush Argentina’s hopes and pull France even with Argentina at 2-2.
Lionel Messi took Argentina the lead from the penalty spot in the 23rd minute, and Angel Di Maria, who earned the penalty kick, added a magnificent goal shortly after. Messi was competing in his last World Cup, and he was hoping to achieve illusive triumph.
Didier Deschamps made two substitutions with four minutes left before halftime because France had been severely outplayed. Olivier Giroud and Ousmane Dembele were taken off the field.
Lineups:
In a 4-3-3 formation, Argentina’s starting lineup looks like this: 23. E. Martinez (GK) — 26. Molina, 13. Romero, 4. 19. Otamendi, 3. Tagliafico — 7. De Paul, 24. E. Fernandez, 20. Mac Allister — 11. Di Maria, 10. Messi, 9. Alvarez
5. Kounde, 4. Varane, 18. Upamecano, 22. T. Hernandez — 7. Griezmann, 8. Tchouameni, 14. Rabiot — 11. Dembele, 9. Giroud, 10. Mbappe France (4-3-3): 1. Lloris (GK) — 7. Griezmann, 8. Tchouameni, 14. Rabiot — 11. Dembele, 9. Giroud, 10. Mbappe
Randal Kolo Muani, one of the guys he threw on, was fouled by Nicolas Otamendi in the area, and Kylian Mbappe scored the penalty from 12 yards out. Then, after a give-and-go with another replacement, Marcus Thuram, the star player for Paris Saint-Germain ended the play decisively.

At the 118th minute, GOOOOAAALLLLL!!!!! Kylian Mbappe!!!!!
Mbappe takes the ball once again to the left corner, and in doing so, he crushes the hearts of the Argentinians once more. Since Geoff Hurst in 1966, he is the only other guy to score a hat trick in the World Cup final. He did it this year.
France has been awarded a penalty in the 117th minute. Gonzalo Montiel sustains an elbow injury as a result of a speculative shot by Mbappe. This is a very obvious punishment. Oh my goodness, this game.
Edouardo Camavinga was the target of a challenge by Leandro Paredes in the 113th minute. Paredes said to Camavinga, “you’re going nowhere, friend.” Booked
GOOOOAAAAALLL!!!!!! Lionel Messi!!!!!!!
Lionel Messi scores one of the sloppiest goals of his whole career in the 108th minute, but the Argentine forward seems unfazed. Lautaro Martinez is able to keep his position on the field and fire off a shot. Hugo Lloris makes a solid save using a combination of his arm and face to make the save. In spite of Dayot Upamecano’s best attempts, Messi is able to sneak a shot between the goalkeeper’s legs and into the net.
Messi gets on the end of a bouncing ball from a throw in and strikes into the bottom right corner, but Lloris makes the save. the 107th minute.
Halftime in extra time: France were understandably well on top at the start of the additional period, but the introduction of Leandro Paredes and, in particular, Lautaro Martinez appears to have given Argentina a shot in the arm. France were understandably well on top at the start of the additional period.
In the 105th minute, Messi plays a ball that is intercepted by Lautaro Martinez. He isn’t quite able to bring a bouncing ball under his control, but he stabs a shot in the direction of the goal. This is yet another massive block contributed by Dayot Upamecano. The referees then proceed to issue a goal kick, which adds insult to injury.
At the 105th minute, Argentina has a chance. Mac Allister and Messi collaborate, and Messi plays a role in the play involving Lautaro Martinez. Dayot Upamecano swoops in with a challenge that might perhaps prevent the opponent from scoring. Gonzalo Montiel absolutely welts one from well down town after he gets it back off the rebound. As a result of deflecting the shot over, Raphael Varane is going to have a headache. Insofar as France is concerned, he did a fine job with what he was given to do.
Double substitution made by Argentina in the 103rd minute. Leandro Paredes and Lautaro Martinez take over after the arduous shifts of the great Rodrigo De Paul and Julian Alvarez, who have just finished their duties.
At the 100th minute mark, Argentina still has no chance of winning. Youssouf Fofana successfully challenges Gonzalo Montiel and earns a free kick. Kingsley Coman is positioned to the left, looking over it. In the process of clearing the ball, Fofana’s shot takes a deflection, and Messi gives up a corner kick.
Rodrigo De Paul, who at this moment can’t possibly have much left in the tank, makes a crucial tackle just as Randal Kolo Muani is looking to break into the box in the 99th minute.
Youssouf Fofana comes in as a substitute for Adrien Rabiot in the 96th minute. France now exudes an air of confidence, in contrast to Argentina’s broken appearance.
The 91st minute is here, and here we go again. Gonzalo Montiel has taken Nahuel Molina’s spot in Argentina’s starting lineup at right back. Montiel replaces Molina. That constitutes an identical replacement. It has shocked me that Lionel Scaloni has not chosen to strengthen the midfield by bringing in Leandro Paredes.
FULL-TIME: Oh my goodness, thank you. What to say. Kylian Mbappe prevented Argentina from taking the trophy, despite the fact that Argentina had a hand and a couple of fingers on it. Incredible, unbelievable sights to see. The team captained by Lionel Scaloni has been in similar position previously in this tournament, namely when they let a 2-0 lead against the Netherlands slip away and had to play extra time.
Will the World Cup be determined by a winner after extra time, or will it be decided by a penalty shootout for the third time in the tournament’s history?
97th minute plus seven seconds: What a moment. Argentina go out, Julian Alvarez down the left. Hugo Lloris gets a hand to the ball after Lionel Messi’s clean shot from 25 yards out in front of the net.
