Gareth Southgate told James Maddison that he would not be in the final 26-person England team for Euro 2024, so he left the camp.
Maddison was one of 33 players picked from England’s training group to play in two warm-up matches this week. They will play Bosnia and Herzegovina (who they beat 3-0 on Monday) and Iceland at Wembley this Friday night. But he only played a short part in the game against Bosnia, and now he has been told that he did not make the finish line.
It is said that Liverpool’s Curtis Jones has also been cut, and his partner Jarell Quansah will also not be on the group. The two were last-minute additions to the 33-man squad, and they didn’t get any time against Bosnia to fight for their spots. Ivan Toney, a striker for Brenford, and James Trafford, a goalie for Burnley, are also thought to be in danger.
England has to send Uefa their 26-player team by 11 p.m. on Friday, which is just over an hour after the Iceland friendly is over. The Football Association will officially make the choice public the next day. Read below to keep up with all the latest stories and events from the England camp before Euro 2024.

Votes to keep VAR in the Premier League
Today in other news, Premier League teams decided to keep Video Assistant Referees (VAR), even though the technology-based method for officiating got a lot of bad press last season.
VAR was first used in the 2019–20 season, and 19 of the 20 teams that decided said it should stay.
The league said in a statement, “It was agreed that improvements should be made for the benefit of the game and fans, even though VAR makes decisions more accurately.”
Six main areas were picked out during talks with clubs:
• Keeping the bar high for VAR; • Cutting down on delays to the game, mostly by adding semi-automated offside technology (SAOT); • Improving the fan experience by cutting down on delays and having referees make announcements in the stadium to explain decision changes made by VAR; • Providing better VAR training with a focus on speed while keeping accuracy; • Being more open and honest about VAR; • Starting a campaign to help fans and stakeholders understand the technology’s role in the game.
The league stated in April that SAOT will be used starting in the fall of 2024 to make placing the virtual offside line faster and more uniform. This will be done by using optical player tracking.
The league and Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL) said they would keep asking the International Football Association Board (IFAB) to give them more freedom to let live video and audio broadcast during VAR reviews.

Sad that Maddison wasn’t picked for the Euro 2024 team: “I’ll be back”
James Maddison, who has seven caps and went to the 2022 World Cup but did not play, said he was “devastated” to be left out and thought he could have brought “something different” to the team.
“Devastated doesn’t quite cut it,” he wrote on social media. I trained hard and did a good job all week, but if I’m being honest, my performance for Spurs after coming back from injury in the second half of the season wasn’t up to par, which meant Gareth had to make a choice.
“I still thought there would be room for me in a 26-person squad because I think I bring something different to the team and have been a mainstay in this whole Euro 2024 qualifying campaign in Germany, but the manager made the decision, and I have to respect it.”
“There’s no doubt I’ll be back.” I wish the boys the best of luck in Germany. They are an amazing group of guys who I can honestly say are some of my best friends. I really hope football comes back home.

The football game from last night: Belgium beat Montenegro
Domenico Tedesco, Belgium’s coach, said that the 2-0 win over Montenegro in their Euro 2024 warm-up game on Wednesday taught them some important lessons.
The first goal was scored by De Bruyne, who earned his 100th cap, and the second was scored by Leandro Trossard from a penalty kick in extra time. The win was never in doubt, but it wasn’t very convincing before the European Championship in Germany.
“I learned a lot today and with the changes I made,” Tedesco said. “But after the break, it was harder to keep the same structure.”
“It was harder for us to get into the game too, but after 75 minutes, things got better again,” the coach said. His team had a good start, but Matija Sarkic, the English-born goalie for Montenegro, stopped them.
For Kevin De Bruyne, it was his first game for Belgium in more than a year. He missed half of the season at Manchester City because of a leg injury.
“I’m glad to be back. “It’s been a while,” he told the press afterward.
“It’s great to be able to play my 100th game here in Belgium.” It was fun to score, and this is a good start. The first half gave us a good chance to take the lead, but after the break, the changes made things a little tougher.
“It’s important to get into a rhythm and make our play more automatic.” “It takes some getting used to too, since I haven’t played much with this team yet,” he said.
“There were good times and bad times, because life could have been better.” We can build on this, though.
On Saturday, Tedesco has another practice game before the team leaves for Euro 2024.
For the next game against Luxembourg, Romelu Lukaku will get some playing time with the rest of the team. I’m also going to change a few other things, but we’ll see. The boss said, “In any case, I will not make six substitutions at halftime again.”

A look at the English players who are going to Germany for Euro 2024 and the ones who might not make the final squad
Curtis Jones and James Maddison were recently kicked out of the England team.
Curtis Jones and James Maddison were both cut from Gareth Southgate’s training group for Euro 2024. Both midfielders have since left the England camp.
The Liverpool player with no caps has lost his competition with Adam Wharton to impress Southgate and get the last middle spot in his team. This is because Kalvin Phillips and Jordan Henderson were no longer in Southgate’s plans. Southgate praised Wharton’s performance in Monday’s 3-0 win over Bosnia and Herzegovina, giving him his start before Jones as a replacement. This is a sign that he will make his 26-man team for the event in Germany.
This was the first player in a training group of 33 who was told they would not be going to Euro 2024. The Tottenham player had a great start to the season, but by 2024, he wasn’t playing as well. Cole Palmer scored on Monday as a No. 10, and Southgate has made it clear that he thinks that is Jude Bellingham’s best place right now. He also had other choices, like Phil Foden and Eberechi Eze, so he didn’t make room for Maddison.
Could Trent Alexander-Arnold be the key to England’s biggest problem at Euro 2024?
The answer to the question “Who plays next to Declan Rice?” might be Trent Alexander-Arnold.
Alexander-Arnold doesn’t seem like a sacrifice as a No. 6; he seems like a find. His long-term job has been talked about a lot, but the holding part hasn’t been seriously suggested very often. It should be: from there, the game opens up in front of him like a sheet of paper, letting him draw whatever he wants.
He can drop between the center backs and take charge. He is able to move forward and link up play, helping attempts around the edge of the box. It might even help Alexander-Arnold’s defense game by making him less of a back-post duelle player and more of a center space-plugger. He made a few smart saves against Bosnia, figuring out what was going to happen before it did.

After years of not being in Gareth Southgate’s plans, the Liverpool right back’s clever play in midfield against Bosnia and Herzegovina showed what he could bring to the England team at Euro 2024.
The latest on injuries: Dunk, Maguire, and Shaw wil not be working on Thursday.
Lewis Dunk, Harry Maguire, and Luke Shaw are all not working with the team today because they need to work on their own plans. The rest of the England team will have a short open training session at Tottenham’s training center with the media present. They will then continue their private preparations for tomorrow’s game against Iceland.
