Germany suspended development aid and financial support to Niger on Monday following the military coup that overthrew Mohamed Bazoum, the democratically elected president.
France did the same on Saturday.
At a Berlin press conference, German Foreign Ministry spokesperson Sebastian Fischer said, “We have suspended all direct payments in support of the Nigerien government.”
Katarina Koven, Ministry of Development spokesman, stated, “A decision was made this morning (Monday) to suspend any bilateral cooperation in the field of development.”
The German government has not yet evacuated its residents or military from Niamey, Niger’s capital, due to the unstable situation. Continuous evaluation will guide the choice.
The German Foreign Ministry official stressed, “The situation in Niger is continually changing, and there is no intention to evacuate nationals at this stage.”
The German government watches for West African state escalation. Since Colonel Major Amadou Abdel Rahman’s military coup, Niger’s government has been suspended and its borders closed.
After Mali and Burkina Faso, Niger becomes the third Sahel country to have a coup since 2020.
ISIS and al-Qaeda insurgents threaten the country.
