In the opening leg of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers, Egypt will host Senegal on March 25 at Cairo Stadium.
The return match will take place in Senegal on Tuesday, Match 29.
Magdi Afsha, the Ahly midfielder, was called up to Egypt’s squad for their World Cup qualifying playoff match against Senegal, however Mohamed Sherif, despite his recent goal scoring form, was left out of the squad.
The 23-man squad for Egypt’s two-legged World Cup qualifier also included three newcomers: Yasser Ibrahim of Ahly, Omar Gaber of Pyramids FC, and Nabil Emad of Al Ahly.
7-time African champions have won 7, while 2019 AFCON runner-up has won 4, and the other 2 times have resulted in ties between these two teams.
With twelve goals, Egypt outscored its opponents eight to zero.
Senegal won the first meeting 1-0 in the 1986 African Cup of Nations group stage.
Both teams met again in 1987, with the Pharaohs winning 1-0. After a goalless first leg, they met again in the AFCON qualifiers ten years later and played two games, the second of which the Pharaohs won 2-0.
Egypt beat Senegal 1-0 in the 2000 AFCON final.
There were six games in 2002 AFCON, in which Teranga Lions won their second group-stage victory. This was their sixth meeting.
Then, in 2003 and 2005, Egypt won both of its friendlies by a combined score of 1-0. (4-2).
Senegal and Egypt played for the second time in the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Cairo, where Egypt triumphed 2-1.
Egyptians and Senegalese fought each other in the 2014 African Cup of Nations qualifiers, and Senegal won both times.
In February of 2021, Senegal beat Egypt on penalties to win their first African Cup of Nations championship in Cameroon.
