In a statement, Osama Mahmoud Abdel Khalek, Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the UN, said that Egypt had been accepted into the UN Human Rights Committee for the time 2025–2028. Ambassador Wafa Basim will represent Egypt on the Committee.
Abdel Khalek said that the polls were held to renew the membership of nine of the sixteen members of the Committee. He also said that 26 countries were competing for these nine spots, making the election very tough.
UN members in the General Assembly of the United Nations who have signed the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (199 countries) vote on the nominees. The Human Rights Committee’s job is to keep an eye on and rate how well states that have signed the International Covenant are doing at meeting their human rights responsibilities.
Egypt’s Permanent Representative to the UN said that the fact that Egypt was able to get a place on this important UN Committee shows that the rest of the world trusts Egypt and wants it to protect human rights around the world.
