- Transformation into a different form finally became the most important thing in Dragon Ball Z to decide who won a fight. This was definitely the case with bad guys like Frieza, Cell, and the fat Majin Buu, who all changed during their correct sagas. The heroes also cared a lot about the Super Saiyan change, especially when it came to Vegeta IV, the Prince of the Saiyans.
While Goku was the first Saiyan to turn into a Super Saiyan in Dragon Ball Z, he wasn’t the last person of his species to do so. During the Android Saga, Vegeta finally changed into a Pokemon, but it took him a long time and a lot of training. This gave him the boost he needed to take on the other Super Saiyan forms. He did this because he wanted to not only live but also do well among all the other warriors.
The second “half” of the Dragon Ball comics made it seem like Goku wasn’t just a weird human with a monkey tail, but an alien Saiyan. This was turned into Dragon Ball Z, and this is where the show starts. As part of the “Saiyan Saga,” Goku and his friends meet Vegeta, the proud Prince of all Saiyans who later joined Goku’s side. This change in view didn’t happen overnight, of course. Vegeta was still hostile and jealous of Goku even after he started working with “Kakarot,” which is Goku’s real name. He told Goku and Gohan stories about their Saiyan history and culture, especially the myths and legends about their race. In one of these, there was a “Super Saiyan” character that some people thought was just made up.
The Super Saiyan was someone whose power was so strong that it could only be fully used when the Saiyan reached a higher state. Even though it was just a story, the Saiyans quickly found hope and joy in it. They had been forced to work for the intergalactic warlord Frieza. He had also learned about the strange being, but he was afraid it was based on real events much more than he wanted it to be. Frieza was afraid that a real Super Saiyan would rise up against him, and the fact that he seemed to have destroyed their whole army stopped that threat in his mind. Unfortunately for him, survivors would come back to haunt him many years later, making his worst fear come true.
After Frieza kills Goku’s friend Krillin on the planet Namek, he turns into a Super Saiyan for the first time. Different sources, like anime and manga, have different ideas about how full-blooded Saiyans first take on the form. One said that the Super Saiyan form needs a strong need, like surviving at that time. The other medium said that the transformation was caused by extreme anger. Both of these could be used to explain how Vegeta changed into a Super Saiyan, which wasn’t as simple as Goku’s change.
Once Goku hit the Super Saiyan form for the first time, Vegeta, who was already very cocky and proud, became obsessed with becoming one himself. After all, he was the only living Saiyan prince left, while Goku/Kakarot was a low-class Saiyan who was said to be weak from birth. Even so, Vegeta finally reached his goal, but Goku was weaker than ever at the time. This made the Saiyan king even more proud, and it also gave him the chance to fight one of the Dragon Warriors’ new, dangerous enemies.
During the “Android Saga,” the mysterious Future Trunks told Android 19 and Android 20 that the Z Fighters were coming and struck them. It was too bad that Goku couldn’t help fight them off. He started to seriously stumble on the battlefield because he had caught the Heart Virus that Trunks had also talked about. He was already tired before he turned into a Super Saiyan, which made things worse. He was so weak that not even the mending powers of the Senzu beans could help. Yamcha flew Goku away to take his heart medicine, leaving Vegeta to fight the Androids on his own. When Goku and Krillin were kids, they beat the Red Ribbon Army, and now these beings were their way of getting payback. In reality, Android 20 was Dr. Gero, the person who created the Androids and used to be a member of the RRA but had become a robot.
The fight against the two Androids looked hopeless without Goku. Vegeta asked if the totally fake Android 19 could feel fear because of this supposed change in the tide. Android 19 was very sure of his skills because Gero had video footage of all the Z Fighters’ fights (except for the one they had in space on Namek). The Androids were caught off guard by Vegeta’s hair turning blonde as his power level rose, which showed they didn’t know how to turn into a Super Saiyan. It had finally been shown that the prince of the Saiyans could change into the “lowly” Kakarot. However, it was still unknown how he learned to become Super Saiyan.
Vegeta wanted to become a Super Saiyan so he could beat Kakarot and show that he was the best Saiyan. Fans will have different ideas about how he did this depending on which version of the show they watch. Vegeta left to do special training in space that would make him stronger than Goku, which is detailed in Dragon Ball Z. Because of these special circumstances, the gravity around Vegeta was much stronger, making it hard to do even easy things. When a huge rock showed up and threatened to destroy his training area, taking Vegeta with it, he wasn’t able to stop it.
All of a sudden, he stopped caring about anything, even beating Goku. He could finally turn into a Super Saiyan only after he let go of his competition. This fits with the previous “need” explanation for the change, since Vegeta had to turn into a Super Saiyan to stay alive. But in Dragon Ball Z Kai and the comics, the story of how Vegeta turns into a Super Saiyan is different. This story builds on the idea that Goku became Super Saiyan because he had a pure heart, which Vegeta turns around to make himself better. He told them that he could do anything Goku did because his heart was pure evil, even though he was still a bad guy at this point in the story.
It doesn’t matter what the reason was; Vegeta could easily change into a Super Saiyan now that he had already done it once. In the same way, Saiyan children (including half-human children) receive a lot of “S-cells” from their parents. This is how Goten and Trunks were able to become Super Saiyans so quickly. The Dragon Ball series has added more Super Saiyan forms since then, but the times when Goku and Vegeta got their first ones were major turning points in the series.
