Backstage with the music icon Pink .. This week, 60 Minutes interviewed Pink, the force behind party anthems such as “So What” and “Get the Party Started.”
The musical superstar’s enormous world tour this year broke attendance records.
Cecilia Vega, a correspondent for 60 Minutes, was in attendance at Pink’s homecoming concert in Philadelphia.
“The term ‘concert’ doesn’t even come close to describing a Pink performance,” Vega told 60 Minutes Overtime. “The location is Broadway. It’s a boulder.
It is a Cirque du Soleil performance with flips and acrobatics. It is truly remarkable vocals. It’s quite a show.”
During one portion of this high-energy performance, Pink spins and entangles herself in silk strands until she is completely upside down while singing. And no safety devices exist.
“She trained in gymnastics as a child, and this is reflected in her performances,” Vega told 60 Minutes Overtime.
60 Minutes traveled to the performer’s home in California to learn how she prepares for this breathtaking aerial performance.
Pink, along with her aerialist instructor Dreya Weber and aerialist partner Khasan Brailsford, practiced the movements from her performance on a large metal structure with ropes hanging from the center.
Pink attributes a change in her pre-performance routine to her coach Weber: she no longer consumes alcohol before taking the stage.
Pink recalled Weber’s words to her when she added aerial performance to her shows: “You must never, ever, ever stop thinking about what you do and respect it as the craft that it is.”
Pink invited Vega and the 60 Minutes crew backstage after her Philadelphia concert to witness her routine post-performance plunge into icy water.
Vega questioned her as she stepped into the ice-cold bath, gritting her teeth and groaning.
“You do not awaken in pain. “It hurts while you’re in it,” replied the singer.
Willow, Pink’s 12-year-old daughter, stepped in after her mother and beat her time by six minutes and seven seconds.
Willow challenged her father and Pink’s husband, motocross champion Carey Hart, to enter the competition. He entered the water up to his neck but exited in less than ten seconds.
“This motocross star, who is a famous daredevil, couldn’t hang in comparison to his daughter,” Vega commented.
