After you eat some chocolates for Easter, diarrhoea would be a good thing to surprise you with. Then, this would be a very bad surprise. Ferrero is recalling a lot of different kinds of Kinder Surprise and other egg products because of a Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak that has already sickened at least 150 people across 10 countries. Most of the people who got sick were young children. You can’t beat these eggs, but a chicken might. According to the UK Food Standards Agency (FSA), the sweets that are being recalled are the following:.
If you buy Kinder Surprise (pack size 20g), you can eat it until January 4, 2023.
“Best By” dates for Kinder Surprise (pack size 20g x 3 packs): All dates up to and including January 4, 2023.
A pack of Kinder Surprise (100g) has all “Best By” dates up to and including August 21, 2022.
Package of Kinder Mini eggs: All “Best By” dates up to and including August 21, 2022, for a pack of 75g.
“Best By” dates for the Kinder Egg Hunt Kit (pack size 150g) go up until and including August 21, 2022.
Until January 4, 2023, Kinder Schokobons (pack sizes 70g, 200g, and 320g) can be bought at any time.
But the U.K. isn’t the only country that has been affected by the outbreak, which led to the recall of the food. If you look at the European Centers for Disease Prevention and Control’s (ECDC) report, there have been 119 confirmed and 31 probable cases of Salmonella in nine European Union/European Economic Area countries and the United Kingdom since December 21, when Salmonella was first found in people who ate food. It said that “most cases” were children under 10, and many were hospitalised. This is not the case for adults under 10 years old.
Seems like the ECDC may not have to go on an Easter egg hunt to find out what caused the disease to spread. Back in December 2021, Ferrero found Salmonella Typhimurium in a buttermilk tank at its Arlon, Belgium, plant, which is where the buttermilk is made. During that time, the company had “taken some hygiene steps and done more testing of products and the processing environment.” After Salmonella tests came back negative, it then sold the chocolate products across Europe and the world. In March 2022, sequencing data linked Salmonella cases in different parts of Europe back to Belgium, which is in Belgium. There were public health warnings, and Ferrero voluntarily recalled some products. After an inspection on April 8, the food safety authority in Belgium shut down the Arlon factory.
Make sure you know that Ferrero U.S.A., Inc. is also recalling some of its products because of a possible health risk. On April 12, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said it was recalling two Kinder products in the U.S.: its Kinder Happy Moments chocolate assortment and Kinder Mix Chocolate Treats basket. if you are going to have this kind of happy moment, you might not want to do it. Those Kinder Happy Moments Milk Chocolate and Crispy Wafers Assortments that have a Universal Product Code (UPC) of 09800 52025 on the right side of the package and a “Best By” date of July 18, 2022, are being recalled because they aren’t safe. It has a UPC of 09800 60209 on the bottom of its package, and the “Best Before” date is July 30, 2022. In this case, if these product descriptions match what you see on your packages (your Easter chocolate product packages), change both of these “Best By” dates to “never” and contact the Ferrero customer service line (1-800-688-3552) or the Ferrero website for a new package.
A lot of these products may have been contaminated, but now it’s not clear how many of them were. It’s also likely that you don’t want to roll the dice and play craps with your chocolates, to say the least.
You should say “no” a lot of the time when someone asks you if you want Salmonella with something. If you don’t like having a fever, diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, then having Salmonella is not a good thing. Even worse, if you are a young child, an older person, or have a weak immune system, things could get even worse than they are now. Infections in your bloodstream or heart or joints can happen if you get Salmonella. You could also die.
In the past, I’ve written about Salmonella a lot for Forbes because you can make a buffet out of the food items that have been the source of Salmonella outbreaks since 2017. For example, there was a big outbreak of Salmonella Oranienburg last Summer that had an onion ring to it, for example. Because food and drink hasn’t been the only source of these outbreaks in the last few years. Besides the fact that hedgehogs have short arms, there is also the risk of Salmonella.
It’s a good idea to check the product codes on your chocolates before you eat them for Easter, or any time after that. We don’t know what we’re going to get in life, so it could be like a box of candy. But one thing you don’t want to get is Salmonella, which is a sickness.
