Football World Mourns Jayden Adams After Tragic Passing Following 2026 World Cup
Tributes have begun pouring in following the tragic death of South Africa midfielder Jayden Adams, who passed away just weeks after representing his country at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, according to reports from The Sun.
The Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder was only 25 years old and had recently shared a photo with his girlfriend less than a day before news of his passing emerged.
Adams featured three times for Bafana Bafana during this summer’s World Cup campaign, starting the opening two matches of the tournament. In total, he earned nine appearances for the South African national team.
South African Football Community Pays Tribute to Jayden Adams
The South African Football Players Union (SAFPU) released an emotional statement mourning the loss of the young midfielder.
“The SAFPU is devastated by the untimely passing of Mamelodi Sundowns and Bafana Bafana midfielder, Jayden Adams,” the statement read.
“Jayden had only recently represented South Africa at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, carrying the hopes of the nation with pride, courage, and distinction.”
The union described his death as a devastating loss for his family, teammates, clubs, the football community, and the country as a whole.
The tribute continued:
“We extend our deepest condolences to the Adams family, Mamelodi Sundowns, Stellenbosch FC, Bafana Bafana and all those whose lives he touched.”
“South African football has lost a gifted player, a proud servant of the game and a young life that still had so much to offer. May his soul rest in eternal peace.”
A Difficult Period for Adams’ Family During the World Cup
The tragedy comes after an incredibly emotional period for Adams’ family, who had recently celebrated his achievement of representing South Africa on football’s biggest stage.
After starting South Africa’s opening match—a defeat against Mexico—Adams was substituted at halftime during the following game against Czechia.
Shortly before that match, it was revealed that his grandmother, Marianna Adams, had passed away just 24 hours earlier.
The South African Football Association (SAFA) released a statement expressing its sadness:
“SAFA is saddened to hear about the passing of Bafana Bafana midfielder Jayden Adams’ grandmother, Marianna.”
“The 72-year-old Marianna Adams passed away a day before the South African senior men’s national team faced Czechia in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Group A match played at Atlanta Stadium on Thursday 18 June 2026.”
Adams’ Final Appearance Came During South Africa’s World Cup Run
The midfielder later made a late substitute appearance against South Korea, a match in which South Africa secured qualification for the knockout stages of the tournament.
However, that game would become Adams’ final appearance as a professional footballer.
He remained an unused substitute during South Africa’s Round of 32 defeat against Canada, and tragically passed away less than two weeks after that match.
Jayden Adams leaves behind the memory of a talented young midfielder who represented his country on the world’s biggest football stage and whose career still appeared to have many chapters ahead.
